Physiotherapy for cardiac & respiratory conditions

Cardiac exercise classes

There are a comprehensive range of cardiac exercise services suitable for all patients who have had various types of heart surgery.  People who have had heart attacks, stents or who suffer from angina may also benefit from these courses, particularly if they are anxious or unaccustomed to regular exercise.

The patients are given a graded individualised exercise programme.  The course runs twice weekly for 6 weeks and includes advice sessions on diet, stress management and long term secondary prevention.   There are also longer term maintenance classes which are held at a variety of times; morning, noon, afternoon and evening to suit everyone.

We provide an individual exercise prescription and regular monitoring of blood pressure and pulse and fitness assessments. We also offer a one off individual assessment in which we assess fitness and prescribe a programme of exercise which might take the form of a walking programme or may be a plan of exercises which could be carried out at home or at a local gym.  We use a variety of exercise testing to objectively assess progress.

All cardiac patients are also welcome to join our cardiac support group, Heart to Heart, who have regular meetings with speakers, newsletters and social events.

Pulmonary Services

We are able to assess and treat a wide variety of respiratory conditions affecting the chest and lungs. Our pulmonary rehabilitation programme is research based and patients receive an assessment in order to advise on the best approach managing your respiratory problem. Promotion of self management, advice, individual exercise prescription including home exercises and involvement of other experts such as Pharmacists and Dietetics are included. The programme can be undertaken in the hospital or in the patient’s home with follow up monitoring. Referrals are also accepted for individual assessments, exercise prescription, treatment and advice for a wide range of respiratory problems ranging from asthma and chronic bronchitis to bronchiectasis and hyperventilation syndrome.

Vascular services

A six week, twice weekly exercise course is available to patients with peripheral vascular disease.  The course is particularly suitable for improving exercise tolerance and reduction of symptoms in those suffering from intermittent claudication which causes pain in the calf muscles when patients are walking. The course includes advice on medication, diet and secondary prevention and patients are discharged with a long term home exercise programme to follow.
