Having physio after surgery
'Physiotherapy can improve the daily lives of patients'.
| |
ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2007) — Physiotherapy can improve the daily lives of patients who have had surgery in the short term, according to a study published on the British Medical Journal website.
Major surgery on a joint may take two or three hours in the operating room. Getting full range of motion, strength and flexibility back in that joint after surgery usually takes months. That's where pre-operative exercise and education and post-operative physiotherapy programs come in - to ensure you're physically and emotionally prepared for surgery, and to maximize your recovery after surgery. Together, such programs are among the most important determinants in the success of your surgery.
Ideally, each component of your pre-operative and post-operative programs is built around the help and advice of one or more health professionals - among them, doctors, nurses, physio- and occupational therapists and/or social workers. You may also be given brochures to read and/or videos to watch - and a lot to think about.
Again, it's all in aid of the best possible result from surgery.
